early spring (or was it late winter?) In the first light of Spring, you can still smell Winter in the background; there is this mixture of new life that is awakening and the remanent scent of melted frost. In these photographs, there is indeed a reference to 'classical' painting as well as to stage arts such as modern dance or theatre: sketches for a possible scenography, with the smoothest transition between fore- and background, giving a sense of infinite, yet well-defined space. This work is also a reflection on how individuals move within groups in open spaces, within set family structures, relations of friendship or acquaintance, or as complete strangers to one another; on how individuals manage their physical distance to each other or the absence thereof, in linear, circular or totally random movements, or in transitional stillness. Creatures living in groups basically have their (un-)spoken rules about each individual's physical place in the group. Humans, as many other species, have their leaders, followers and outsiders. In how far are movements the result of purely physical behaviour and gesture towards one another? How do they relate to words uttered, to vocal messages conveyed? (right-scroll to see all) |
